Personality Traits and Speaking Skills : The Impact of Introversion and Extroversion on EFL Learners

Individual differences play a significant role in second language learning, particularly in the development of speaking skills in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. Among these differences, personality traits such as introversion and extroversion may influence learners’ participation in oral activities and their overall speaking performance. The present study investigates the role of introversion and extroversion in shaping the speaking skills of EFL learners. Using a mixed methods design, the study combines quantitative and qualitative data to provide a comprehensive understanding of this relationship. Quantitative data are obtained through personality assessments, including the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), along with learners’ IELTS speaking scores to measure speaking proficiency. Qualitative data are collected through semi structured interviews to explore learners’ experiences, participation patterns, and attitudes toward speaking activities in the classroom. The findings indicate that personality traits may influence learners’ participation and comfort in different types of speaking tasks. While extroverted learners tend to participate more actively in interactive speaking activities, introverted learners may demonstrate greater comfort in structured or prepared speaking situations. These findings highlight the importance of considering personality differences when designing speaking activities in EFL classrooms. The study provides pedagogical implications for language instructors seeking to create more inclusive and effective speaking environments that accommodate diverse learner characteristics.
