Literal versus Semantic Translation: A Critical Analysis

The debate between “Literal Translation” and “Semantic/Communicative Translation” stands as one of the most enduring topics in Translation Studies, consistently challenging translators to maintain a delicate balance between “form” and “content.” This research aims to provide an analytical examination of the nature, advantages, and limitations of these two approaches and to determine their respective roles in the process of message transfer. Utilizing a descriptive-analytical methodology, this paper re-evaluates the theoretical foundations established by key scholars such as Nida and Newmark. The findings demonstrate that while literal translation, by preserving the source language structure, serves as an efficient tool for sacred, legal, and technical texts, it often leads to “false fidelity” in the context of literary and cultural texts due to its disregard for the target language’s nuances. Conversely, semantic translation—by prioritizing the author’s intent and adhering to target language norms—proves more successful in achieving “dynamic equivalence.” Ultimately, this study concludes that the boundary between these two approaches is not an absolute divide but a continuous spectrum. An effective translator is one who, depending on the “text type” and the “purpose of translation” (Skopos), can judiciously balance structural adherence with the preservation of meaning.
